    Role

    In this role, the individual will be accountable for overseeing the tax operations for company’s subsidiaries and holdings in Japan and supporting their integration into the company’s global tax system.  Furthermore, this individual will also be expected to provide support to the regional and global tax team on broader initiatives.

    • Build an efficient and effective in-house tax operations in Japan to support the Global Comfort Solutions (GCS) business on tax compliance, reporting and risk management
    • Partner with key stakeholders on integration and transformation initiatives to drive business value and efficiency
    • Identify, develop, and implement tax strategies supporting the company’s effective tax rate objectives
    • Develop an understanding of key business attributes and flows and apply knowledge to assist businesses with planning their activities and identifying opportunities
    • Support the businesses and advise on the tax implications of their business transactions.
    • Support data collection and review information required for U.S. tax reporting
    • Communicate, collaborate, and coordinate with other members of the tax group, as well as other headquarter and business functions as appropriate and necessary
    • Ensure activities are consistent with agreed upon international tax objectives
    • Manage relationships with outside advisors
    • Partner with Tax Risk Management team to support and resolve tax audit activities and queries
    • Advise on tax implications of changes in capital structures, shareholders and funding of activities.
    • Lead / support due diligence and planning and implementation with respect to acquisitions, joint ventures, and dispositions
    • Track, communicate, and plan for changes in tax law in relevant jurisdictions
    • Build relationships with the businesses (business heads, finance, legal, business development) to promote tax awareness and support tax initiatives

    Requirements 

    • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Tax or Legal discipline
    • Certified Public Accountant or equivalent, and/or other financial certification, and/or advanced degree in tax law preferred
    • At least 10 years’ experience in tax with a Japan focus
    • At least 6 years’ experience in a tax role in a reputable accounting or tax firm in Japan with the last few years of in-house tax operations experience
    • Strong oral and written English and Japanese skills required
    • Ability to identify and prioritize key opportunities and risks related to business operations
    • Ability to understand complex tax concepts in various jurisdictions and apply those concepts to minimize taxes
    • Ability to direct research and to implement complex tax planning strategies
    • Understanding of the impact of taxes on the financial statements, and identify opportunities to combine tax and accounting knowledge to improve business results
    • Experience in post-acquisition integration and transformation will be an added advantage
    • Light travelling (1-2 times per year) is expected
